Signature Projects

ASTRA is an international community service club open to all CHS and CSHS students and sponsored by the professional women of Altrusa DFW.  ASTRA stands for Ability, Service, Training, Responsibility, and Achievement. The club offers a fun way to provide community service, leadership opportunities, and positive interactions.  ASTRA’s main goal is to focus on literacy and provide hands-on help for children.  Our members are very involved in many other school activities and organizations.  We are proud to unite and serve our Dragon community to turn our “compassion into action”.

Back-Pack School Supply Drive

This project provides brand new backpacks filled with brand new school supplies to economically disadvantaged children in Northeast Tarrant County and to children whose families are impacted by domestic violence. These supplies are given at the beginning of the school year, saving the families significant expense and providing the children a sense of confidence and equal footing among their peers.

Bag of Bubbles is an Altrusa DFW project started in 2015.  Altrusa supplies bags of toiletries to the Center for Transforming Lives for their homeless shelter.  The bags are given to the women who enter the shelter throughout the year.  Also we have added in 2017 donations to Catholic Charities for Veterans returning from war.  This is a fun hands on project which our club enjoys and does so well. This project is also supported by Astra who collects travel toiletries to add to the bags.

The BWF is a visionary agency founded to aggressively fight the growing problems of domestic violence.  The BWF understands that if takes more than temporary shelter to begin a new life of

independence and self-sufficiency.  It requires a complete lifestyle change – a change founded in renewed hope for the future

Center for Transforming Lives (formerly YWCA) program provides a bridge to successful independence for women who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.  This highly successful program of transitional living and emergency shelter provides case management and supportive services designed to assist participants with developing and accomplishing life goals to achieve self-sufficiency. Altrusa supplies Bag of Bubbles and coordinates a birthday celebration at the center.

Christmas is for Children (CIFC) is a non-profit organization 501(C)3 dedicated to providing all children the love, care and joy that comprise the spirit of Christmas, CIFC seeks organizations and individuals to contribute gifts, food and funds.  CISD children and over 1,500 children throughout the DFW Metroplex benefited from our 2016 campaign.

Altrusa DFW’s Red Bag Food Drive distributed 7,200 red food bags in 2016. These were distributed throughout Southlake and surrounding communities to collect enough food to help CIFC fill 1000 food baskets that are provided to needy families in the area.  Altrusa DFW also raises funds to pay for 600 turkeys that are distributed with the food baskets! Hundreds of volunteers throughout the community assist CIFC in assembling and distributing the food baskets in December.

A new activity we added to CIFC in 2015 and 2016 was “Operation Cookie Elves”; we actually baked, bagged, and served almost 11,000 cookies over the span of three days.  Each of the 1,000 food baskets included 7 cookies in a festive Christmas baggie, and the 1,000 Grab-n-Go bags for the homeless each contained three cookies.  Plus, we served almost 1,000 cookies to the hundreds of volunteers who showed up to fill the baskets!

Each summer Altrusa DFW makes a difference by volunteering to help our community’s children through Feed Our Kids.  GRACE started this program in 2005 with the mission to provide lunches for area children during the summer weeks when free school lunches and breakfast are not available  Feed Our Kids fills these “hungry” weeks with sack lunches, milk, smiles and loving atmosphere.  Altrusans prepared lunch for over 100 children each day during one week in July.  They fed the children at an apartment complex in Grapevine that houses primarily economically disadvantaged families. Approximately ten volunteers per day are needed (Monday – Friday) to prepare, setup and distribute the lunches to the children.  Members and the Foundation donate all the food and supplies necessary to feed the children for the entire week.  After lunch, Altrusan color, do craft projects and organized games for the childrenSince 2015 Kiley Shafer and Austyn Griffith, Altrusan member’s children  have volunteered, collected and distributed new and used books to the children during our week of fun in the sun.

Munhu is a 501(C) 3 organization dedicated to help children orphaned by AIDS in rural Zimbabwe.  It provides direct support for children’s education, assistance for children who are head of household and we extend help to village communities as well.  “Munhu” is the word for person, a human being, in Shona language (the majority spoken language in Zimbabwe after English).  For our organization, Munhu represents our core value of caring for people in need, especially for children.

The founders of Munhu believe that every child deserves an education.  They believe in a world where every child should have an adequate education and live a healthy and dignified life.

Young DFW Writers

Altrusa DFW is proud to support the Young DFW Writers program that promotes literacy by teaching poetry to high school students across the DFW metroplex.  In its third year, YDFW is active on multiple campuses.  This program reaches out to students most at risk and draws them in with its roots in hip-hop lyricism. The curriculum is implemented by teachers and local teaching artists trained in the unique genre of slam poetry that combines verbal prowess with dramatic expression to create riveting performance art.
